This figure introduces the theme of women, which has been central to Joan Miro's work since the 1920s. At the beginning of this decade, Miro painted La Ferme (The Farmhouse) and a year later La Fermière (The Farmer), a true personification of the place. These counterparts reveal Miro's conception of woman as a human being linked to the earth. As we know, Miro drew his inspiration from his surroundings and his native land. For him, the woman is the link between humanity, the earth and the cosmos: "For me, what I call Woman is not the female creature, it's a universe. [...] the side of violence, leaving aside the human side, a personal violence. [...] Woman, or character. Never man. Woman or character or bird".
Miro translates his own vision of women in many ways. He can trace the contours of her body with a sinuous line. The result is a light, symbolic poetry. In our work, the opposite is true. The woman stands on oversized limbs, strikingly out of proportion with her head. The prominence of her sexual attributes, added to the curves of her body, evokes a personal interpretation of the archetypal mother goddess. She occupies most of the composition. The absence of contours, combined with the use of cheerful, flat colors, seem to stretch her morphology. She blends in with her surroundings, dominated by a celadon green.
The work of his friend Picasso shows similarities, such as his interest in the female body. Picasso said of Miro: "We live in the same world". It's true that these two artists share many similarities and have influenced each other. In 1930, Picasso produced a series of oil paintings culminating in L'acrobate. It shows a contorted body, missing its trunk, with immense legs and arms and a sculptural appearance. Both artists adopt morphological distortions, though their meanings differ.
