Follow André MARFAING
André Marfaing was born in Toulouse on December 11, 1925.
He began studying law in his hometown and obtained his license. Then he moved to Paris from 1949 and devoted himself exclusively to painting.
In the 1950s, he moved from figuration to abstraction, through decisive encounters with artists like Pierre Soulages, Francisco Bores, Roger Bissière, Maurice Estève, Alfred Manessier and Gérard Schneider.
His first abstract canvas dates back to 1953. In October 1956, he signed a contract with the Claude Bernard gallery in Paris which organized, in May 1958, his first personal exhibition.
In 1959, Marfaing produced his first engravings and practiced washing. That same year, he won the Lissone Prize for Young Painting.
In 1962, he represented France at the Venice Biennale alongside Poliakoff, Messagier, Guitet and Manessier.
He exhibited in Paris and abroad and participated in the collective exhibition "Fifteen painters of my generation" in 1966 at the Galerie L'Atelier.
From 1971, he adopted the technique of acrylic (paints on paper, vinyl binder). His painting evolves: the conflicts are as if appeased, the canvas is purified, in a sort of asceticism between white and black. Painting is of a serious and meditative spirituality.
In 1974, for the joint anniversary of their friends Gillet and Pollack, Olivier Debré, Bengt Lindström and André Marfaing decided to make a canvas painted with six hands.
He died in Paris on March 30, 1987.
