Dedicated “A Mr. Resnais Très cordialement” (Alain Resnais)
Fernand Léger's Les Tournesols belongs to an emblematic series dedicated by the artist to his wife, Nadia Khodossievitch Léger. The series is rooted in an affectionate and symbolic gesture: Nadia, a great lover of sunflowers, had planted some in their garden, until her husband, in an excess of artistic rigor (he wished to put sculptures in their place), decided to remove them, provoking the anger of his companion. In response to this incident, Léger created this series to make amends and reconcile his gesture with his love for her. In this lithograph, he transposes the liveliness and beauty of the sunflowers into his own pictorial language, marking a gesture of tenderness and reconciliation.
