This lithograph full of softness and luminosity that we propose is part of a small edition printed and published by the Maeght studio.
With the intention of rendering the austerity of reality that he takes from Cézanne, Braque fragments the space in order to introduce the object, here, a bird taking flight on a delicate cameo of mauve. The bird is one of his favorite subjects during this period, because the grace and aerial movement of the animal in the air allows him to paint space. It is also for Braque, the symbol of rebirth.
The bird, with its simple appearance, confuses us because the form acts independently of the color. The darker areas are in harmony with the lighter ones, while the contours stand out abruptly from the background, in a formal flatness of the most obvious. All the sensitivity of the artist emanates from the image, so much so that it reminds us that Guillaume Apollinaire saluted Braque "for using forms so unknown that only a few poets suspected their existence".
