Tamar, dressed in red and veiled, embodies both transgression and spiritual revelation. The red symbolizes her audacity in the face of the levirat, while the veil accentuates her mystique and anonymity, so that Judah does not recognize her. With this bold gesture, Tamar takes her destiny into her own hands, becoming an essential character in the biblical story. She appears here as a determined woman, ready to overturn social conventions to preserve her inheritance and that of her late husband. Chagall captures the ambiguity of her act, an extreme rebellion guided by justice.
