Karel Appel, one of the founders of the CoBrA group in 1948, was a central figure in this movement, which broke away from the dominant artistic influences of Paris and New York. Named after the initials of its members' hometowns - Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam - the group advocated free, independent creativity.
The painter's approach is powerful, free and spontaneous, challenging artistic conventions. Every canvas, every drawing bears witness to his desire to return to a pure form of art, without filters or constraints.
Our lithograph, bursting with luminous color, features a stylized bird and character. These simple, vibrant forms capture the essence of the Dutch artist's universe, where spontaneity and raw energy are omnipresent. Its simplicity and vibrant colors perfectly embody Appel's philosophy: a celebration of freedom, primitiveness and spontaneity, essential elements of his art and worldview.
