Limoges porcelain
Signed in the body
In this Limoges porcelain plate, we find a composition similar to the Signal lithograph, built around the complementarity of red and green, the dissonance provided by blue and the contrast created by the duality of black and white. Sonia Delaunay also plays with the opposition of semicircles and rectangles. The former, arranged in the center of the plate, perfectly matches the shape of the support, while the latter clash with it in a strikingly dynamic rhythm.
This composition may represent the completion of the motif for Delaunay, who used it over and over again. The artist drew inspiration from a gouache and charcoal painting entitled Rythme couleur, dating from 1967 and held at the Musée d'art moderne in Le Havre, as well as an oil on canvas from the same year exhibited at MoMa. The motif was also reused in the creation of a tapestry entitled Contrepoint, produced by the Pinton factory in Felletin, and also reproduced as a print.
