In the bright light of Vallauris, Picasso was inspired by Suzanne Ramié's Madoura workshop. The Spanish artist redefined the boundaries between traditional craftsmanship and modern art. With its anthropomorphic, bird-like silhouette, Pichet espagnol reflects Picasso's Mediterranean imagination and Iberian roots. The black motifs, painted and engraved on the pale clay, recall both the popular pottery of his childhood and his lively, spontaneous line. Halfway between functional object and sculpture, this pitcher transcends its practical use to become a work of art in its own right. The marriage of utilitarian object and creative gesture reflects Picasso's goal at the height of his career: to make his art accessible.
