Platonic Dialogue
Text by Pierre Albert-Birot
One of the five copies on Japon nacré
Book including 8 unsigned engravings
Serge Poliakoff wishes to illustrate Plato's dialogue and creates an idyllic marriage of literary and artistic languages. While Plato explores the relationship between the one and the many where a unit is a sum of infinite multiplicities, Poliakoff manages to express this dialectical game through complex structures which maintain the supremacy of the unit behind the varied combinations.
In the same way that Plato plays with his reader by proposing contradictory hypotheses, Poliakoff introduces his spectators to the perpetual change of forms by encouraging them to seek a “solution” which is the most true for each person.
This artist's book was exhibited at the Rath museum in Geneva the same year, alongside those of Jean Arp and Sonia Delaunay.
