Jean-Michel Atlan (1913-1960) had a brief life but with uncommon intensity. He was born and spent his youth in Algeria, where the Berber traditions left a lasting impression on him. As a student in Paris, he became a professor of philosophy and was close to Gaston Bachelard (1884-1962).
Self-taught in painting, he invented a powerful pictorial world that drew its sources from African, pre-Columbian and Assyrian arts.
As is often the case in Atlan's work, the forms are enigmatic. We have the impression of discerning creatures, living forms, but we cannot conclude anything definitive. This is what makes Atlan's art so attractive.
These forms are not attached to any specific context, but the artist gives them a particular strength and energy through his black line. The color complements the composition beautifully and tempers the power of the black. The orange background, with its pencilled appearance, vibrates and shines through under the black. Some notes of blue and red complete this vigorous composition.
