This lithograph in 2 colors, black and gray is a rarity in the work of Bram van Velde (1895-1981), one of the great colourists of abstraction from the 1950s. A rarity because the artist, admirer of the art of Matisse (1869-1954) composes, with refined colors, geometric and curvilinear shapes. Here, he is satisfied with two colors, with nuances, in a broad gesture. This recalls the work in wash practiced by the painter. The constraint to limit oneself to two colors is strong, but van Velde does it masterfully, composing a work based on the balance of the solids and the parts left in reserve,i.e not covered with ink. A subtle balance made of asymmetry and counterpoints, a sober and powerful work.
