Arches vellum.
Paper very slightly yellowed, some light dampstaining, slight marginal handling creases.
Soulages generally uses broad brushstrokes to apply the paint, before removing material. In this lithograph, the artist merely suggests similar gestures. In a succession of four plates, he gradually adds a luminous ochre that emerges from a black mass. The contrast of this palette with the white of the paper lends an aesthetic singularity to the artwork.
As usual, Soulages places the pictorial experience at the heart of his abstraction. He concentrates on gesture, fullness and emptiness, materials and, ultimately, light. He confronts us with a stripping away of matter, an innovation that has left a profound mark on the history of modern art.
