In The Red Rooster, Chagall's work combines emotional intensity with a complex quest for identity. The rooster, central figure and animic double of the artist, transcends its symbolic role to become the mirror of the inner duality that runs through him. The brightness of the red contrasts with the more subtle hues of the purple couple and the shrub, creating a palpable tension between the strength of his Russian origins and the softness of his French influences.
