Aquatint, silk-screen colored
On BFK Rives paper
It was engraved with the multi-branched burin (the velo) that Léger particularly liked. F. Leger produced only three aquatints, including this one.
Fernand Léger's The Magic Bird, one of his only aquatints, blends pictorial modernity with pre-Columbian influences. Using geometric shapes and a stylized posture, the artist creates a mythical bird with vivid colors and minimalist motifs that adorn it like a veritable ornament. Léger's words, “Birds are always wonderfully well dressed”, take on their full meaning in this work, as the bird becomes a symbol of simple, timeless, almost magical beauty.
