Serge Poliakoff's visual culture is strongly animated by his sensitivity towards ancient Russian icons. The latter are executed by a combination of different flat areas of color, which brings together colors particularly present in this lithograph: vermillion, purple, green and brown.
In the religious context, these colors have a symbolic meaning. In the work of Serge Poliakoff, they are free from any narrative meaning and express a sound of their own. We also perceive the intention of fidelity to the original pigments and natural renderings of colors. This awakens a feeling of joy, intrinsic to the qualities of these colors. To quote Baudelaire in his critique of Eugène Delacroix in 1885, “Everyone knows that yellow, orange and red inspire and represent ideas of joy, wealth, glory, love.”
