Invitation card for the February 20, 1931 Anthropometric Ball at the Boule Blanche
Mixed media (modern), 1931
16.00 cm. x 29.50 cm. | 6.3 in. x 11.61 in. (paper)
Invitation card on cardboard from Georges Simenon and Paul Colin
The invitation announces a ball that goes beyond the mundane, as it is the publicity launch for Georges Simenon's first two novels, Monsieur Gallet décédé and Le Pendu de Saint-Pholien. This extravagant event, in which a police file of a fictitious criminal is used as an invitation card, promotes Simenon's image as a successful writer and marks the birth of a popular literary character, Commissaire Maigret. The press coverage of the evening shows the importance of the event in establishing Simenon as a writer in the French literary panorama.
