This large plate by Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979) is composed of two different systems: portions of a circle at the top and bottom, rectangles in the middle. Sonia Delaunay, one of the pioneers of abstraction with her husband Robert, worked a lot on the circular form in her paintings and a lot on the quadrangular forms in her textile creations. She was one of the most inspired fashion designers.
This composition is like the meeting of these two fields of creation which fascinated the artist.
The colors masterfully assembled reinforce each other in a powerful density, tempered by a work in guilloche and very fine hatching, like a textile weft, which allows this technique of etching employed by Sonia. The metal plate is covered with a varnish that the artist scratches with a dry point, a patient work that only allows this textured rendering. The color is deposited in greater quantity in these fine striations.
As is often the case with Delaunay, the circles create a movement, which energizes the composition. The rectangles seem to be in balance. Movement, balance, these are important compositional elements in Sonia Delaunay's art, elements that are like concepts that become sensitive matter here.
