Bram van Velde (1895-1981) is one of the most original masters of abstraction. Painter not very prolific, existentially restless, note very confident in life and in the world, Bran van Velde used lithography to make his work known. Then, over the years and the ease acquired in this medium, he created original lithographs. Moreover, he worked on his unique gouaches in anticipation of their equivalent in lithographs. This practice became fundamental for him. This 1977 lithograph is large, full page. The shapes, with their flexible geometry, are harmonious, so specific to the artist. There is rigor, architecture, in addition to this fascinating chromaticism.
It is a gestural painting where color is everything, it decides the composition, the rhythm. The painter's hesitations are transformed into pictorial delicacies. Nothing dogmatic about van Velde's work who defined his work as difficult but also as "a leap towards life, towards the energy that makes life possible »
