From the book “Birds in Peril” with Dorothea Tanning
Two hybrid birds illustrate this intriguing etching by Ernst. One sports an open, turquoise bat-like wing, brooding over a mysterious little being. In the upper left, a circle of firearms shows a discreet but present threat, while below, a yellow target draws the eye.
Here, the artist blends textures and symbols to create a scene that is both poetic and disturbing, where the absurd and the critique of war and military power lurk in the guise of unreal creatures.
