Léger's wood resembles a city whose trunks make up the buildings. The title gives a narrative character to this large aquatint made in the Lacourière studio, one of the most creative, in the 1950s, a time of renewal for engraving. In general, Léger's work is spontaneously associated with the modern world, with technical progress, with the machines that he often represented. But the artist also loved nature, he said "an oak tree that can be destroyed in 20 seconds takes a century to grow back. Birds are always wonderfully dressed, progress is a meaningless word, and a cow that feeds the world will always go 3 km per hour". We love the magnitude and monumentality of Léger's work here. A work conducive to reverie, which takes us into the poetry of Leger.
