As a master of abstract art, Serge Poliakoff reveals himself to be a learned geometer whose subtlety prevails over formal rigidity through his approach to color. He arranges them in such a way as to manifest lines, in their angularity, their continuity and their rupture, thus expressing the space as he imagines it with its contours, its voids, its dynamism.
Poliakoff dares to create a composition with an architectural dimension for his first collaboration with the Berggruen gallery in Paris, in a gouache from the same year which he uses here for the purposes of creating the poster for the exhibition in November 1957. Dominated by a shades of red, creating depth and relief, the work is structured around colors seemingly dispersed from the center. Yellow, blue, white and black create the rhythm so unique to the artist, that caused by a return to the interior.
