The compositional principle of this work is imbalance: two clearly distinct parts face each other. First, the upper part, with this buttercup yellow almost in a flat tone, a beautiful density of color that gives depth and almost a velvety aspect, then the lower part, composed of interlocking geometric forms, of different colors, laid with a rubbed effect that makes them almost translucent.
As can be seen in this description, the two parts of the work are in opposition point by point. Yet, thanks to the science and talent of Serge Poliakoff (1900-1969), this composition is harmonious. From this yellow monochrome emanates a luminosity that allows not to be "crushed" by the lower part of the work, more densely composed. Some oblique forms are repeated and thus give rhythm and make a counterpoint to the few vertical lines.
The artist not only masters the chromatic chords but also the spatial effects that result from them. Thus, by a daring but risky composition, Serge Poliakoff manages as often to master a harmonious imbalance.
