Henri Goetz (1909-1989) was born in New York. After studying electrical engineering, he realized the importance of art in his life. Like many young people of his generation, he settled in Paris, a place of avant-gardes, of international friendships and of cheap models. His favorite practice, the portrait no longer meets his aspirations. He begins to produce abstract works. His proximity to surrealism - he met Breton in 1938 - enriches this abstraction with the power of the unconscious. The 1950s were those of an abstraction close to the art of his friend Hans Hartung, of Soulages or Schneider. In the oil painting we propose, which is characteristic of the 80's - the culmination years - Goetz intertwines curved shapes, quadrangular surfaces; on the right, an oval shape, almost a tree leaf. , vestige of a time when Goetz painted abstract paintings facing landscapes, inspired by the ordering of nature.
These entangled shapes create the illusion of a space in which they float. It would have horrified Mondrian. Goetz prefers the presence of the material-painting, posed by touches that swarm or stretch in flux. All is hightlighted by a powerful and deep blue.
