Incredible reds, carmines and, in the middle of the composition, this luminous patch of yellow. It's reminiscent of the “little patch of yellow wall” described by Marcel Proust in Vermeer's famous painting Vue de Delft, which so moved him.
The colors of this lithograph are among Poliakoff's most frequently used. As is often the case, the artist doesn't content himself with a simple flat color, but superimposes different hues. Thus, beneath the roses, we can make out shades of blue-green or gray. In the mid-1930s, Poliakoff was living in London and naturally visited the British Museum, particularly the Egyptian department. In front of the painted sarcophagi, he had a seminal experience: the colors were superimposed to enrich the nuances. Poliakoff retained this technique and masterfully appropriated it, as can be seen here: chromatic richness and subtle transparencies, on this fine artist's proof.
