Inspired by a gouache produced the same year, this lithograph was used as the model for the poster for the exhibition held at Galerie Berggruen and Galerie Knoedler in Paris in November 1959. It is symptomatic of the late 1950s, when Serge Poliakoff's pictorial compositions were characterized by their high density and sustained rhythm.
The artist uses the combination of primary colors, the axis by which the great painters have developed their palette since Antiquity, to structure space in all its dimensions.
The internal dynamics of the work, moving from the inside out, from the heart to the extremities, give expression to the sensitivity of Poliakoff's multicolored effusion. These colors, with their texture sublimated by his recognizable gesture, are accompanied by white segments, illuminating the whole.
