This poster is a reprint in 1976 of a mythical poster produced by Miro in 1937, commissioned by the publisher and critic Christian Zervos, founder of one of the most important magazines, Cahiers d'art in 1926. Zervos commissioned from Miro a 1F stamp as indicated on the poster, which raised funds for the Spanish Republicans fighting against the fascist regime of General Franco. A struggle that tears Spain apart in a bloody civil war. The stamp is then enlarged in posters, printed in a few copies, one of which was presented during the Miro retrospective at the Grand Palais at the end of 2018. Miro here represents the familiar figure of the Catalan peasant, wearing the red barettina, the raised fist, voluntarily disproportionate. Miro also receives a prestigious commission for the pavilion of Republican Spain, the artist chooses to represent a peasant there too. The work took place near Guernica, but unfortunately it has disappeared. Our farmer with a raised fist therefore has a certain symbolic dimension. The colors, frank, luminous, the almost universal gesture make this poster a timeless image of resistance to oppression.
