Our gouache testifies to a prosperous year for the artist, marking an assertive entry into his mature period, when he achieved solid worldwide recognition. This key moment in his career was characterized by an in-depth exploration of color, through new experiments with pigments. His early works, such as this gouache, reveal a multicolored palette, where saturated brown tones gradually metamorphose into vivid colors. The choice of brown paper as a support emphasizes the warmth emanating from his compositions.

In his quest to define painting, Serge Poliakoff declared: “What interests me in painting is its purity”. His compositions generate their own space, which creates form. His irregular, asymmetrical forms evoke a harmonious order, fitting together like puzzle pieces to form an indissociable whole.

The rigor of the shapes highlights the noble, captivating color, resulting in a musical composition, a veritable “plastic poem” with subtle vibrations. Colors come together and overlap, as if each color were an integral part of the others. This is particularly evident in the textural treatment provided by the gouache. In places, the finish is polished, in others, it gives the impression of rubbed paint. The result is a chromatic uniqueness merging with a disparity of finishes, creating a certain transparency of material.
