Serge Poliakoff (1900-1969), a major figure in the abstract art of the Ecole de Paris and a remarkable colourist, is considered one of the pillars of modern art. His artistic training was based on figuration, but in the 1930s he gradually turned away from the landscapes and portraits he loved and began to produce his first abstract compositions. The 1940s heralded the advent of his singular abstract style, in which line plays a key role. This style became particularly defined around 1949 with the appearance of a series of geometric compositions based on combinations of flat areas of colour. Over the next two decades, Poliakoff produced a large body of work that formed his artistic vocabulary, with iconography that varied according to the artist's research.
For our exhibition, we have chosen to focus on the last decade of the artist's life, the 1960s, while observing the development of his work from the late 1950s onwards. This was a fruitful period for the production of prints, thanks in particular to his collaboration with the Erker-Presse lithography workshop in St Gallen, Switzerland. Alongside etched and printed works, we present a number of gouaches and oils on canvas that mark a turning point in Serge Poliakoff's creative output. This selection is complemented by family archives and the book Parménide, a unique project by the artist.
