In Japan, the higanbana is highly symbolic. Its name, which literally means “flower of the equinox”, refers to the period when it blooms, around the autumn equinox, a time of year when Japanese Buddhist tradition celebrates the Higan, dedicated to remembering the dead and praying for the souls of ancestors. This flower symbolizes both the end and the passage, a form of tragic beauty, reminding us of the fragility of life and the inevitability of death.

In this engraving, the higanbana blooms gracefully, its black filaments stretching like the threads of fate. Each fine, subtle line unfurls in an aerial dance, reminiscent of the petals of this amaryllis, a symbol of separation and renewal in Japanese culture. The engraved contours appear to float, as if suspended between two moments in time, both ephemeral and eternal, capturing the essence of fleeting beauty.

Here, the higanbana becomes a visual metaphor for passage, an imprint left by memory on paper. In this delicate etching, Tachibana sculpts emptiness and infinity, weaving a fine canvas where time wraps around itself, reminding us that even separations leave indelible traces, sensitive echoes in the silence of the world.
