From "Vingt-deux poèmes" of Jean Cassou
Our lithograph illustrates the exploration of themes dear to the artist: metamorphosis, eroticism, and the blurred boundary between the object and the female being. The figures evoke contorted bodies, halfway between reality and fantasy, translating a tension between seduction and disquiet. This dialogue between the visible and the imaginary has a deeply personal dimension for the American artist. The feminine vision was explored for the first time in Surrealism. She joined the American branch in 1936, and became close to French artists exiled during the Second World War.
Tanning drew on her childhood memories and experiences to create a universe where fantasy and anguish mingle. His poetics, marked by a sadistic influence, explore buried desires and fears, bringing to light a complex and often disturbing erotic imagination.
From the 1960s onwards, Tanning turned to abstraction, retaining the motif of a fragmented humanity. Her fabric sculptures continue her fascination with fragmented bodies that seem to metamorphose. In this sense, the artist wishes to “fix the moment, to accept it with all its complex identities”, defying the barriers between the concrete and the dreamlike, while provoking a profound reflection on identity and the transformations it can undergo. The work testifies to her ability to make the unspeakable tangible, offering a space where the imaginary and reality meet.
