This admirable etching and aquatint is emblematic of Braque's work during his mature period, when the artist took a keen interest in birds. He uses this motif from the 1930s onwards. André Malraux's commission in 1952 of the fresco "Les Oiseaux" for the ceiling of a room in the Louvre further accentuated Braque's public affection for this motif.
The work is also emblematic of the last years of his career, with its roundness of form. However, the influence of his Cubist period is omnipresent. Lines emerge in different places, in a seemingly incoherent arrangement, organizing themselves into a pattern. The importance of the construction of space, from several points of view, is apparent: "Fragmentation served to establish space and movement in space, and I was only able to introduce the object after I had created the space". Stripped of meaning, the bird thus constructed metamorphoses into a sign. A sign of freedom, rebirth, spirituality and imagination.
The process of plastic fragmentation is also expressed through the use of color. A dozen chromatic variations reflect a rich interplay of textures and transparency. Soft, vibrant or diluted, they characterize intaglio engraving, which brings an undeniable depth.
