Josef Albers is best known for his research into color and visual perception, particularly through his famous “Homage to the Square” series, in which he explores how colors interact and seem to change according to their context. A Bauhaus artist, he contributed to the fusion of architecture, design and the visual arts, and trained a new generation of artists in the United States after his arrival in 1933. Albers considered that, because of its simplicity, the square was the perfect neutral, geometric form for exploring the interactions between colors. In “Hommage au carré”, he applies colors in a uniform, flat manner, choosing sober hues. His work and teaching exerted a major influence on the artists of geometric abstraction, and later on those of the Op art movement.
