Sheet for “Paroles Peintes
On Richard de Bas Auvergne paper
This work illustrates Louis Aragon's poem and sets the action in the Alhambra of Granada, with its Moorish arches. Two lovers dance in a timeless moment. The myrtle, present in the poem, finds its place in the composition, reinforcing this poetic and romantic dimension. The work exudes sensuality and love. To the left of the composition, Chagall introduces the violence of the real world, represented by soldiers returning from war, creating a vivid contrast with this dreamlike scene. This duality between dream and reality, love and war, underlines the underlying tension of Granada, where the artist contrasts the intimate, gentle dimension of life with the brutality of the outside world.
