Fouquier-Tinville was a revolutionary magistrate and a symbol of the excesses of the Terror, nicknamed “the purveyor of the guillotine”. True to his style, Buffet illustrates events and key figures with dramatic sobriety, emphasizing nervous lines, angular faces and a certain austerity. This approach heightens the gravity of the French Revolution, accentuating its tragic, solemn character.
