Poems by René Char
Pulled on pearl Japan
Throughout his career, Joan Miro maintained his passion for poetry, an essential source of inspiration for his art: "Poetry opened up new possibilities for me, and made me go beyond painting". A poet himself, he forged many artistic friendships with poets of his time, whose literary works were a constant stimulus to his own.
René Char (1907-1988) was one of those with whom Miro maintained a poetic dialogue. Between 1948 and 1976, Miro illustrated twelve of his publications, including Le marteau sans maître, a compilation of poems written since 1927 and originally published in 1934. Considered an early work, it had a major influence on the artistic creation of the time. For the first edition, Vassily Kandinsky, the father of abstraction, created the drypoint frontispiece.
Our selection of works is taken from the 1976 publication of this collection, illustrated with twenty-six etchings and aquatints. True to his meticulous temperament, the Catalan artist applied himself to creating complex compositions. Black reigns supreme, as it often does in his work of this period, structuring space with free forms that are both undulating and fractured. Miro's fiery expression is revealed through a formal rigor reminiscent of René Char's careful choice of words. Despite his close ties with the Surrealists, reflected in the temptation to write automatically, it is his desire for mastery and precision of intention that prevails, driven by a quest to anchor his work in reality.
