A horizontal composition with three dominant colours: grey, blue and red, and a beautiful inking
define this important plate by Serge Poliakoff (1900-1969). We could almost speak of classicism, as this work is so representative of the unique balance developed by the artist.
Serge Poliakoff succeeded in being one of the most original representatives of French abstraction, with a style never seen before.
Here, the composition is articulated between verticality and horizontality.
First of all, horizontality, which is manifested by the general format of the work and which is recalled by two median bands at the top and bottom of the composition.
Within this general horizontal frame, the artist has created a vertical, almost in the middle, which does not occupy the entire height of the canvas, as is often the case with Poliakoff.
The rest of the geometric forms are delimited by oblique lines that temper the presence of horizontality and verticality.
This balance of forms is reinforced by the subtle presence of colour. It cannot be said enough that Serge Poliakoff was one of the greatest colourists of the 20th century. 
The colours balance and reinforce each other. The complex aquatint technique gives a special texture to the colours: as if it gave them depth. The material resembles that of a nebula, in the infinity of the cosmos. 
A work conducive to reverie, stimulating the imagination.
