Aquatint and burin on copper
Arches paper
With this large format engraving, Serge Poliakoff sublimates the specificities of intaglio using aquatint and burin. He created it in collaboration with the Brazilian artist Sérvulo Esmeraldo (1929-2017), an eminent engraver of the second half of the 20th century.
The result is a fabulous color chart of coppery colors, whose chromatic richness unfolds within a dense and highly textured composition. The cuts in the copper plate made with a chisel engrave the lines which delimit the different spaces. In the same way, they reveal the reliefs through streaks and hatching. The aquatint technique gives finesse to this impression of a corroded surface from which flamboyant variations of browns and blacks emerge, revealing the nobility of dark colors.
