Our lithograph comes from Chagall's 1960 Bible illustrations. The soft, warm colors, subtle gestures and luminosity of Chagall's own work are used to implore divine solicitude for the people of Israel.
Using ochre and sand, Chagall recreates the suffocating heat of the Beersheba desert. Hagar and her son Ishmael stand motionless, trying to survive despite the lack of water. The angel appears as a promise of salvation, offering Hagar not only a source of water, but also a glimmer of hope in a desperate scene.
