Jean Arp (1886-1966) was one of the major artists of the avant-garde in the first quarter of the twentieth century: Blaue Reiter with Kandinsky, Dada movement with Tzara, surrealism ...
Protean artist: poet, writer, sculptor, painter, engraver, Arp receives in 1954, the Grand Prix of sculpture in the Biennale of Venice. In 1958, the Museum of Modern Art in New York devoted a solo exhibition to him. It is the consecration.
Arp practiced a lot the woodcut, a rare technique, used for the beautiful plate that we propose, taken from the last work made by Arp in 1966. Very sought after by the collectors, Soleil Recerclé which gathers poems and illustrations of the artist, title as mysterious as poetic.
The composition of this work is captivating in more than one way; Arp plays on the different planes: the cream background of the sheet, then, a gray circular form, an indeterminate form, to finish; an irregular polygon but nevertheless geometric, counterpoint to the biomorphic forms of the rest of the composition.
Nature -the biomorphic forms- and geometry here reconciled with a serene accuracy. Arp also composes with our perception of the foreground and background, and creates a form of optical ambiguity.
