Bertrand Dorny (1931-2015) was a painter but above all an engraver, a technique learned from the very inventive Johny Friedlaender (1912-1992). In 1967 he gave up painting and devoted most of his time to printmaking, which he helped to renew. He then taught at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He collaborated with many writers and poets to illustrate their words, as evidenced by the rich background of the National Library Mitterand. The Center Pompidou also has some very beautiful plates by the artist. Dorny preferred aquatint and etching techniques. The support was mostly a zinc plate that he hollowed out in the desired patterns. Then he layered plates (with different cut-out patterns) on top of each other and put them to a press. With the pressure precisely, the paper took on relief, which can be seen on this beautiful plate by Dorny, from 1972, during the so-called "rubble and checkerboard" period. He designs patterns with the spirit of an architect, a builder. Here, the relief of the paper, the texture of the inks: very light or very textured, as if rough, introduce a technical refinement in a very controlled chromatic composition. The black areas have a splendid dullness and depth.
